Band Review (Nell)

The band that I will be introducing to you is a Korean Indie band called Nell.

Who are they?
Nell is a Korean Indie band.

The band was formed in 1999 and introduced its first album in 2001 (Reflection Of)

This album included 10 songs. However, this album failed in brining Nell much of an attention.

Hoping for public to be aware of them, Nell introduced its second album (Speechless) in September of the same year.

I would say that the second album did bring some attention of the public to Nell, but not enough.

In favor of Nell, its third album (Let it Rain) brought them some more attention

From the fourth album, Nell’s mode of singing had changed and developed its own unique and famous mode of singing. This mode was of singing the serious subjects in rather ironically light and cheerful and fast paced background music.

‘Good Night’ from the fifth album (Healing Process) is a perfect example for this.

In 2007, Nell publishes its sixth album (Let’s take a walk).

Disappointingly, this album was not much of a hit and made people to think that Nell was on the downfall

However, Nell blew up this thought by coming with the seventh album in 2008 (Separation Anxiety)

This album could be said as the best album of Nell.
It included famous songs such as ‘Separation Anxiety’ and ‘기억을 걷는 시간’ (time for going back).
These songs helped Nell to get on the stage of famous Korean music stages such as 인기가요, which was dominated by Idol group singers at that time.

They did publish another album 3 months after their seventh album. However, it was just mix up of Nell’s so called ‘hit’ songs, so I would not necessarily call it their eighth album.

Any ways, five months after this mix-match album was published, Nell comes out with its last album, ‘The Trace’

Unlike its previous albums, this one only had four songs in it. However, all of those songs were good and the album is thought to be one of the best album of Nell.

Why Like Them?
You might have noticed that I called Nell Indie Band.
No it is not an Indian Band but something completely different from that.
Indie Bands are underground bands in Korea that sings in clubs or bars or places like that.
However, the funny thing is that Korea is the only place where there are Indie Bands.
Because of the domination of the music industry by Idol Groups, any non-Idol singing groups were basically kicked out from the main stream and caused the ‘kicked out ones’ to suffer because of the lack of attention from the people because Idol Group’s took all of public’s attention toward them.
Suffering hear means that they were in state of earning low amount of money and hand to work 24/7 to just earn enough money to keep themselves from being hungry.
This was the reason why they sang in clubs and bars and had the particular term ‘Indie Band’ (Under Band, if you would have to put it in English, I think.)
So since they were able to come back to the main stream and only Indie Band that came back to main stream, you could see how much musical talent they had and how good their music was.

Picture of an Indie Band ‘Seven Grams’ singing (not Nell)

What is so unique?
I guess what is unique about this band is that they are really sentimental
For example, from the album ‘Healing Process’, song ‘Meaningless’ showed so much sentimentality that I got so absorbed into it that I actually spent a Saturday listening to it after putting it in ‘infinite replay’ state.

Video

So, I decided that basing my blog just on web-toon will be challenging. Therefore, I changed my mind to doing my blogs on random stuffs in my life. So, today’s blog is going to be on this funny video that I found while I was surfing through the web. This was funny to be so I hope it is funny to you to. Anyways, the first one is from BBC and as you can see when you watch it, it is about the animals talking. (You can find the video under the section “Animals”) The one that I found most cute was that beaver that was constantly yelling “Allen.”
Anyways, I wanted to share with you another video, but I was not, well I should not because the video is rated R and it seemed to be inappropriate for the school. So, let me just tell you the basic regular outline for it.

This is the main poster of the movie. This movie was shown in the Buchon Fantastic Movie Awards in surprise and was awarded Best movie award and Audience award. (This was translated from Korean so the awards’ names might not be correct).

Genre: horror + comedy
Short movie: about 10 minutes long
Director: Richard Gale
Starring: Paul Clemens (Jack) and Richard Gale (Kinosaji)

This particular movie is fun that the killer kills people with spoon rather than efficient weapons such as knife or gun. Also, another point of the laughter is the reaction of the fat guy, main character. He reacts similar to usual main character of a horror movie, but is funny in that it is exaggerated and that he is afraid of something that should not (?) be afraid.

If you want to watch the movie go to here:

However do notice that this movie is rated R.
It is your own decision to decide wether the materials dealt in the movie is suitable for your age or not.
(Funny because guy who is not even 18 years old watched rated R movie and is warning other under 18 years old to not watch it…. haha…)

Jeung-Geoul-Go ended!!!!

Jeung-Geoul-Go, (Jungle High school if translated in to English) ended 2011.01.31, which was last last Friday. This particular web-toon started being published in naver.com since 2006.01.16.

Anyways, it messed up my day, kind of, because I was great fan of the web-toon since last year and had read all 456 episodes.
This web-toon was about Korean educational system and showed varying views on the Korean educational system based on different people’s point of view and showed what people hate and like and what seemed to be the good and bad side of the current Korea’s educational system
In episode #1
The narration says that
“At first when I went into the school, the teacher showed me this particular documentary (with the cheetah on it) and said that the lesson to learn from it is that the education is a cycle in which students compete with each others.” (The words in the red block means this)
Like this this web-toon had been fairly critical on what is wrong with the current Korean high school and that only way to really survive it is just by surviving and holding on to your place.
However, it does not forget the second purpose for its existence: entertainment. It also succeeded on successfully entertaining the readers by showing us numerous jokes and new ways in which something could be handled.
The following equation is from the episode in which the students were discussing about the marking the bubbles on the test. One character says that the marking the bubble method should not be used and new method should be in the use because filling in bubble method gives you higher chance of marking the wrong answer even though you knew the answer. For example, let’s say that the answer for this particular question was A, but you marked B because you thought that place where B was was where the choice A was. Anyways, the student being the advocate of the bubble marking choice said that marking choice also gives you happiness when you get a question by guessing and getting a question write and comes up with this equation.
The equation means that when X equals happiness you get by picking and getting a question write divided by sadness you get by marking the wrong bubble on mistake. And when X=1 the advocate of the bubble marking choice says that we should compromise on the line that we should be careful while marking the answers for a test.
Like the name suggest, the author of this web-toon thought that the high school of Korea is similar to jungle and made his web-toon to be named Jungle High School. He thought that the Korean education system is similar to jungle because it urges the ones in it to compete each other and carry out the survivor of the fittest.
The main character of this web-toon is Beul Sa Joe (phoenix) looks like a chicken….
So tis guy is the appearance of the main character and as the name suggest is a phoenix, he does not die.
For fiver years, Kim Keu Sam, author of the Jungle High School, has been providing us with good and acute web-toons that was both informative and persuasive cartoon that helped us, students, to see that we should not be so depressed always and think that we are in the worst condition of the education pyramid. Lastly, I hope they make Jungle University too..!!!

First Blogging for Mr. Stephen’s Class

Hello world, my name is Hee Seung Son sophomore in KIS, if you are reading this you probably know all this but, anyways, I have been considering deeply about what this blog is going to be about last weekend, but I was not able to grab anything to be my main theme of this blog. At that time because I was stuck on a problem, I automatically did what I did when I was stuck. Watch web-toon. Then it hit me. Why not make my blog to be based on something that people do not pay much attention to? Yes web-toon! So, I decided to make my blog to be heavily based on web-toons that I watch and maybe some other things like music that I enjoy to listen to or movies.

Anyways, let us go back to the main topic, telling you the information about myself. I live in Korea, I was born in August 13th, 1995. This year I am fifteen years old. I have one older sister and she goes to regular Korean school, called Seuk Myeong High school. I live at Banpo. I am interested in, like previously said, web-toons. You can say i am in love with it because watch it all the time 24/7. To be honest I even watched it during my classes. (Do not tell my teachers!!!). Anyways, that is almost everything about me and I will be back next time when I have to write another blog article for the class. With web-toons
